Ebola: FG beefs up surveillance at borders

NCC - Friday, July 03, 2015

Following the discovery of a new case of Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia, the Federal Government said it had ordered that security and surveillance be beefed across the nation’s borders with a view to checking possible spread of the virus into the country.

The Director, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi, while speaking with Saturday PUNCH, said the Federal Ministry of Health was closely monitoring the situation in Liberia and also working in harmony with the World Health Organisation and other international agencies with a view to checking the ‘importation’ of EVD.

He said, “We have the Port Health Services and we have already authorised them to step up their activities and responses and ensure thorough checks on travellers coming into the country.

“We have strengthened our emergency operation centre; also our information and communication department are on top of the situation.

“We are also monitoring what is happening in Liberia. We are working in harmony with WHO and other international agencies,” he said.

The Director of Press and Public Relations in the FMoH, Mrs. Ayotunde Adesugba, in a statement had advised Nigerians not to panic.

She said, “Nigerians should not panic but must be aware and be vigilant. Members of the public are advised to observe basic hygiene and report any suspected case to the nearest health facility. It must be noted that the main symptoms of the Ebola Virus Disease are fever, severe headache, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Patients in some cases also have neurological symptoms of becoming confused and restless.”

Heart-touching Story Of How Elephant Killed A White Man In Ibadan. See Picture

NCC - Thursday, July 02, 2015

In 1995, Peter Davies was on holiday in Nigeria after graduating from Louisiana State University .

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the University of Ibadan Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1995, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Olaoluwa Hallowed-Oluwadara Is Africa’s Youngest Ph.d Holder

NCC - Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Dr. Olaoluwa Hallowed Oluwadara

A 24-year-old Nigerian on Wednesday made history in Africa as he received a Ph.D Degree in Mathematics at the convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the 2012/2013 academic session.

Olaoluwa Hallowed Oluwadara, whose thesis was adjudged the best in Engineering and Science, having made a cumulative grade point average of 5.0, was described as the youngest Ph.D holder in Africa.

According to the university, Oluwadara was able to finish the programme within the three years of stipulated period.

He got two first and second degrees in Mathematics (Pure Option) and Physics in 2007 and 2008 respectively, at the age of 18, from the University de Bangui, Central African Republic.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues at the convocation ceremony, Oluwadara said his achievement was not only a personal triumph but a triumph for mathematics as a useful subject of study in Nigeria.

How I emerged Africa’s youngest Ph.D holder at 24
24 year old Olaoluwa Oluwadara is University of Lagos youngest Ph.D graduating student, and also Nigeria’s and Africa’s. In this interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly, the Doctor of Mathematics gave a graphic report of how he achieved that feat and much more…

You achieved a rare feat as the youngest Ph.D holder in Africa. How does it feel?

It feels good and fulfilling. It is not my ultimate goal but I am honoured and humbled that my hard-work has been rewarded. I’m really grateful to God.

What do you think helped you achieve this?

I owe this success to God. Over the years, He has helped me to set incredible goals for myself and worked hard towards them with focus, discipline and consistency. Good mentoring from my parents, pastors and supervisor also helped.

During your programme, what was your daily routine like?

I woke up every day in front of my laptop. I hardly shut it down because it was a useful tool for my research. I spent time studying and researching both at home and in school. I also had time to pray in the morning and attend church services.

What was the driving force for you?

The desire to be the best has always been my driving force. I wanted to excel, to reach the goals I fixed for myself. I kept on pressing forward.

Tell us some of the ups and downs you had enroute to where you are today?

At 13, I failed my A’ levels during my first attempt for reasons other than poor performances. I say this because I had the best result in my school before the exam. It was a serious disappointment but it turned out to be very pivotal because not only did I learn how to be humble, patient, resolute and how to depend on God, I also channeled my frustration into better performances. I went on to have better scores and more outstanding successes after that setback.

What age did ‎you start and finish pre-university?

In Central African Republic (C.A.R) and many francophone countries, primary school spans six years, secondary over seven and the University at Undergraduate level over three years. I started primary school at 5, secondary school at10, and reached A’ levels at 13, courtesy of four double promotions (one in primary school and three in secondary school).

Can you share with us your growing up days and the pre-university schools you attended?

I had a normal childhood. I was dearly loved by my parents and siblings. My parents really invested in my education. When they were chanced, they tutored me in Mathematics and other subjects. I attended the International Preparatory College (College Preparatoire International in French) at Primary and Secondary levels (from 1994 to 2003) and the Lycee d’Application de l’Ecole Normale Superieure (2004) for my second A’ levels.

Tell us about your family, your position in the family and what kind of family you are from?

I come from a godly family of three children. I am the last born of my parents. They are missionaries of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry to C.A.R.

You had your first and second degrees o

Bloggers demand payment of transformer allowance- Read why

NCC - Thursday, June 25, 2015

Bloggers have taken to the street to protest the non-payment of their transformer allowance. According to our correspondent, Professor Cletus, the bloggers argued that every blogger should have a personal transformer  installed in their place of residence  or its money equivalent paid to them in order to stay immune to power failure. Mathew Johnpaul, an upcoming blogger expressed his frustration with what he described as "power kwashiokor"  which has characterized the power sector. He posited that every blogger should have fixed allowance to cushion the effect of the epileptic power supply which has plunged all bloggers into darkness forcing some of them to buy UPS for their laptops.
He said, " some of us are yet to update our blogs for more than a month. We appeal to the new administration and the senate to move the motion of providing transformer allowances to all the bloggers in the country. I tried to update my blog with a news about how a grandmother trekked from Otuoke to Daura to congratulate the new leader but NEPA took light"
Another angry blogger expressed dissatisfaction and complained that his alexa rank has fallen like his grandma's breast and urged the FG to intervene and fulfill their campaign promises of providing 500 KVA transformers to all the bloggers and wondered why every blogger shouldn't beat Linda Ikeji if equipped with the necessary tools.

How I Got Delivered From Masturbation Addiction

NCC - Thursday, June 25, 2015

I'm writing this to share my experience with masturbation addiction, because this has become a problem for many teenagers and adults, both male and female. I almost ruined my life with incessant masturbation, i do it 2-4 times daily, i derived pleasure in engaging in it not knowing i was making my life miserable. I started masturbating at the Age of 16 after watching a pornography and i wanted to know if i'm matured enought to Erupt. I masturbated for good 7 years, i enjoyed doing it, it was quickie, i masturbate to ease myself when i'm restless, unhappy or tired. I was terribly addicted to it, i do it in the bathroom, in my room, or anytime i'm lonely. I enjoyed it most especially when i'm watching pornography, it was sweet, i didn't have a girlfriend, i was battling low self esteem. It was crazy, it was fun, especially when you're about to Erupt but immediately you Erupt, you become remorsed for doing it. Masturbation addiction made me
loose so many things in life, i was stagnant, disappointment, delay to success, difficulties began to set in, it almost ruined my sex life. It affected my health because i was always weak, i was having heart burn, burning discomfort in my abdomen region, ache in my joystick region. It affected me academically, financially, morally and spiritually as a christian. I needed to stop it cos i was already seeing the repercussion, it was so hard for me to stop it, i tried praying and fasting but it didn't work, i googled some articles online on how to stop masturbation, it worked, yes it worked but i found myself doing it again after 2 months of abstinence. Well, according to some medical doctors, it is very healthy to masturbate, while according to some pastors, it is a sin, while some pastors say it is not a sin. Whichever way, masturbation is addictive and most people do abuse it. I abused it, it wasn't easy to stop but it deals with your mindset. It can be
good to masturbate once or twice in a month but it can be very dangerous if you masturbate everyday. Once you start masturbating, it becomes hard for you to stop, for me, i think those who masturbate everytime are perverts. Masturbation is still safer than sex, but it ruins you psychologically when you become an addict. So many became an addict like me, some are still an addict, while some will be an addict. If you are feeling guilty after masturbation, it means you know it is bad. Masturbation is good but when you become an addict, then it is bad. I'm sure you want to stop it but you just don't know how to stop it, i went through a lot when i needed to stop it, it takes the grace of God to stop chronic masturbation, if possible deliverance. For me, i'll rather advice you to masturbate than to visit a prostitute, but believe me abstinence is the best. Masturbating everytime is evil..

I cried, i prayed and asked God for forgiveness, promised never to do it again, but i will come back and do it. I became fustrated, i couldn't speak to anyone about it, whom do i talk to? that i'm addicted to masturbation? God forbid! I was only naive and foolish, speaking to someone about it was the best, not just anybody, speak to someone who is sane and sage. I remember i told someone about it and the silly advice the person gave me was, ''masturbation reduces the risk of prostrate cancer'', like seriously? Is that what i need? Watch who you talk to.

So many teenagers and youth masturbates 2-3 times daily, which is bad, you're a pervert if you do this. It would affect you negatively. How i got delivered from masturbation wasn't easy at all, some of the 5 major steps i took.

1. I Talked To Someone/Counsellor: I was having difficulties on how to stop this, i decided to talk to someone/counsellor, to seek an advice. They guided me, led me in righteous path. You could go to rehab center or groups, they are willing to help you. I don't know if speaking to a pastor is adviceable cos sometimes, things like this is not only about deliverance and prayers or even fasting. You can pray, fast about it but you should also consult someone or people that are going to help you fight it.

You can't fight masturbation addiction by yourself, talk to someone, don't be ashamed to talk to someone. Chronic masturbation is still better than visiting prostitutes regularly, so speak to someone who you think that can help you.

2. I Got Myself Busy: Being idle is a disease, when i didn't have anything to do, i tried to read some books, bible, watch movies, visit a friend, i wasn't alone. Cos when you're alone, that thought comes straight into your mind. I'll advice you to just sleep. In my own case, during this stage, i discovered my writing talent, i also discovered Linda Ikeji's blog and i was inspired to start a blog of mine, i started a Fiction & Non-Fiction Stories blog. I got busy and addicted to my blog and writing stories, my blog now has over 3 million views out of being idle and abstinence from masturbation. Find something to do, don't be idle....

3. Deleted Pornography From My Phone And My Life: This is important, to me i still prefer you stay away from browsing and camera phones, stick to non browsing phones, phones that don't have video camera and start using Nokia torchlight for some period. I was adviced to stay away from browsing phones, i had to use a non browing phone for a long time. Although, its not easy to do for some people to do away with browsing and camera phones, but i'll advice you to delete every pornography pictures and videos on your phone and laptop, like i did.

4. Stopped Visiting Pornography Sites Or Groups: There are so many porn sites, i ran away from them, i stopped visiting them. I remember i used to bookmark them, i had over 20 hottest and favourite pornsites, i had to delete them. Also, i know there are some porn groups on BBM, Whatsapp and other social media platform, please stay away for a long time. I stayed away from them and i survived..

5. I Stayed Away From Sexchat or phone intimacy: This is one of the most horrible thing to do, sex chatting, phone intimacy is a gateway to masturbation, is it possible to sex chat and not masturbate? Is it possible? No, it not possible, the worst part is the sex chatting on Skype, or any video calling media. Its dangerous, exchanging Unclad pictures and all that, i just had to stop all of it. You also have to stop it as well.

You just have to fight like i fought mine. If you don't have a girlfriend or sex mate, i'll advice you to masturbate once or twice in a month to ease yourself or better still don't masturbate at all if you're the pervert type.

This is my little story on masturbation addiction, how i became a survivor, how i fought it. I'm sure you can get some helpful tips from my testimony.

52-year-old Teacher Rapes 5 Year Old Pupil In Classroom

NCC - Tuesday, June 23, 2015
The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a 52-year-old school teacher, Isaac Ikiabeke, for allegedly raping a 5-year-old pupil in the Ikorodu area.

Ikiabeke, who is the proprietor of the school, Brighter Glory School, located on Etunrere Street, raped his victim after school hours.

The victim, five-year-old Pat (not her real name), said Ikiabeke had allegedly raped her 10 times.

She said,

“He has been doing it for some time. He has done it more than 10 times. I am not the only one. He does it with some of us after school hours. I could not tell anybody because he said if I did he would beat me.”

The victim’s grandfather explained that his attention was drawn to the sexual assault by some of Pat’s classmates.

He said he was shocked, as well as disappointed in Ikiabeke, whom he regarded as a respectable man.

He said,

“Pat and her younger sister stay with me and they attend the school. I never suspected anything initially, except that I observed she would be holding her belly and turning on the bed and when I asked her what happened, she would say she was having stomachache.

“It was one of her classmates that told me what the school owner had been doing to her and I quickly went to report at the station, after which he was arrested.”

The matter has since been brought to the attention of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender.

A police source said that they got complaints from two victims.

He said a three-year-old pupil, who was equally raped by the suspect, was in a critical condition in a hospital.

He said,

“There were actually two pupils that we were told he raped. The atrocity had been going on for a long time before he was arrested.”

Pat has since been taken to the hospital for treatment.

The police on Monday arraigned Ikiabeke before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on one count of unlawful sexual intercourse.

The charge read,

“That you, Isaac Ikiabeke, on June 9, 2015, at about 3pm, at Brighter Glory School, Etunrere Street, Ikorodu, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did have unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, (name withheld) aged five years and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 258 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial.

The case was adjourned till August 10, 2015.

Boyfriend Inserts Pepper Into Lover’s Private Parts (PIC)

NCC - Monday, June 22, 2015

A 34-year-old man, Solomon Ajisafe, has been arrested by the police for allegedly torturing his girlfriend, Tope Amuda, in the Igbo Olomu, Ikorodu West area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Solomon, together with his mother, a leader in the Oodua People’s Congress, and some hoodlums flogged Amuda with canes for alleged adultery.

Our correspondents were told that afterwards, she was taken round the community, before ground pepper was allegedly inserted in her private parts.

The incident happened last Sunday at about 7pm on Aminu Toyin Street.

A resident, who identified herself only as Adunni, told PUNCH Metro that attempts made by neighbours to stop the torture was rebuffed by the OPC.

Adunni said Amuda, a 25-year-old Osun State indigene, lost her mind due to the trauma she suffered.

She said, “They did not allow anybody to rescue her. They made jest of her for hours as they took her round the community. I saw her; she was speaking to herself and was incoherent. That was when I discovered that she had lost her mind.”

The General Secretary, Igbo Olomu Community Development Association, and Coordinator, Women Arise Initiative in the area, Adebayo Obatungbase, said she reported the matter at the Igbo Olomu Police Division.

She said the community was planning to send away Solomon’s mother, whose name was given simply as Mrs. Ajisafe, from the community.

She said, “The suspect’s mother calls herself a prophetess, but she is also a member of the OPC. We have decided to send her away from this community.”

The Chairman, Igbo Olomu CDA, Michael Adekoya, described the incident as “sheer acts of wickedness.”

He said, “The police are trying, but we need special attention from the government. This community has turned to something else. Why would a normal human being insert pepper in a woman’s private parts?”

However, Solomon told our correspondents that he only slapped his girlfriend, adding that they had been dating for the past four years without anything to show for the relationship.

He said, “I am a hardworking man and I had a son before I met her. We have dated for four years and during that period; there was no child between us. She has been a thorn in my flesh because she always made trouble with my family.

“She later fought with my mother and because of that, she decided to pack out of the house. Nine months later, she returned and said she was three months pregnant for me. That was when I beat her. I confessed to the police that I beat her up, but it was only a slap which made her eye to swell.”

Solomon’s sister-in-law, Ayomide Ajayi, a nursing mother, who was equally arrested, told PUNCH Metro she was innocent.

Ajayi, 27, said, “I don’t know anything about the allegation. You can ask her.”

But the victim, Amuda, insisted that Solomon and his family members tortured her.

Amuda, who spoke in Yoruba, said, “He and his family members used bottle to insert pepper into my private parts. I am done with this relationship. Let everybody go their separate ways.”

A police source told one of our correspondents it was possible Amuda was also flogged with a charm.

The source said, “When we picked her from the general hospital, she could barely walk. They really dealt with her and she has been giving us some useful information on their occult operation.”

Our correspondents learnt that the Office of the Public Defender had equally shown interest, leading to the arraignment of Solomon and Ayomide before an Ikorodu Magistrate’s Court on three counts of assault.

The charges read in part, “That you, Solomon Ajisafe, Ayomide Ajayi and others now at large, on June 14, 2015, at about 7pm on Aminu Toyin Street, Igbo-Olomu, Lagos, in the Ikorodu Magisterial District, did assault one Opeyemi Amuda by beating her with cane all over her body; that you indecently and unlawfully assault her by inserting pepper and a bottle inside her vagina, which caused her bodily harm.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate ordered

Masturbation Opens Spiritual Portals

NCC - Sunday, June 21, 2015

People who cannot control the urge to masturbate or watch pornography are almost always plagued with a sexual devil. Maybe more than one.
In the world of the spirit and according to Jesus Christ: the sexual thought is the same as the sexual act (Matthew 5:28).

When we use the powerful force of imagining something as if it were real, we are actually attracting that which we imagine into physical being.
When we imagine having sex with another via masturbation, we are actually summoning the power of the spirit realm to manifest the thing we are imagining.

We've all heard about the law of attraction by now, made popular from books and movies like The Secret. Well the law of attraction also works with sexual imagination.

There are such things as sex demons. And the danger in masturbating is that one could inadvertently summon a sex demon to attach itself to you through the act of masturbating. And once that demon attaches, it is difficult to get it to leave. It will drive you to masturbate, even when you don't want to. You'll be hit with urges to play with yourself so powerful that only an orgasm will allow you some temporary relief.

In worst case scenarios the one demon may gather other unclean spirits to itself to also attach to your life. That way it can wrap you tighter in its web of control, making it that much more difficult for you to get free. And many never do (Matthew 12:43-45).

By engaging in those acts of sexual impurity you are giving such evil spirits legal access into your life. And they will remain, causing untold personal pain, guilt and shame until the more powerful force of Jesus Christ is used against them to expel them from your life for good—See: Luke 8:29, Luke 9:39 and verse 42; Galatians 5:19-21; 2nd Corinthians 6:17-18

I Never Imagined My Three Friends Could Gang Rape Me(Pictures)

NCC - Saturday, June 20, 2015

In an act, which has shocked residents of a neighbourhood in Iju area of Lagos, three friends – Habeeb Adisa (25), Kehinde Aderinoye (25) and Ilyas Ogundimu (27) – have raped one of their female neighbours, a young woman, who is their close friend in the neighbourhood.

The victim, 19-year-old Adenike (not real name), a hair stylist, volunteered to speak with Saturday PUNCH, saying she summoned the courage to speak about her ordeal because she did not want them to go free and do the same to someone else.

Narrating how she was violated by the three men whom she trusted most in their neighbourhood, Adenike told our correspondent that not once did she suspect within the two years she knew them that they had such a heinous plan for her.

Calmly, but with a lot of anger and pain showing in her eyes, Adenike said, “I became friends with them as neighbours two years ago when my mother first rented an apartment in the area.

“Kehinde began to make advances to me. But I told him we were friends and did not want to be in a relationship with him. I have always rejected his advances.

“Later he would tell Habeeb and Ilyas to approach me to appeal on his behalf to accept his proposal, but I made them to understand that I could not go out with him. But we still talked and sat together in the neighbourhood as friends.”

Unknown to Adenike, the gentle disposition of her three friends was just a façade for the plan they had hatched on how to sexually assault her.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2015, an opportunity presented itself for the rapist friends to put their plan to work.

Adenike said, “In the morning of that day, around 9.30am, I went over Kehinde’s house like I usually did sometimes when I had nothing to do at home. I trusted them completely and usually went there to while away the time.

“Habeeb and Ilyas were there also. We were just talking when Habeeb suddenly came to me and picked me up. He threw me on the bed and I told him that I didn’t like that kind of play. I said, ‘If this is part of your playful habit I am not up for it.’

“But as he threw me on the bed, before I could stand up, he lay on me and pinned me down firmly. Kehinde quickly came over and started to remove my underwear. That was when I knew what they wanted to do. I struggled with them but they pinned me down and took turns To Molest me.

When I was screaming, one of them quickly went to the CD player, which was on at the time and turned on the music to maximum volume so that it would drown out my voice.”

When they finished, the three friends smiled in relish, it was learnt. They told their prey to pretend that what happened to her was a mere sexual encounter.

“They told me to just forget what happened and keep it between the four of us. But I realised that if I was afraid of stigma and kept it to myself, they would walk free and even boast to their friends about what they did to me. They would surely do it to someone else,” Adenike said.

Bruised and battered, Adenike summoned the courage to approach someone she trusted in the neighbourhood and narrated what happened to her. She was immediately advised to go to the Iju Police Division and report the incident.

As soon as she reported, some landlords in the area rose in the men’s defence.

Adenike’s mother said that because the parents of the rapists are landlords in the area, they first threatened her that if she decided to make the issue a police case, she would lose.

But on Thursday, after the police had arrested the suspects, our correspondent witnessed as families of the culprits and other residents of the area came out to the police station to beg Adenike’s mother.

Adenike’s case highlights the increasing incidence of sexual offences in Nigeria, where majority of sexual offences go unreported.

On Friday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu, told our correspondent that the suspects had been charged to court.
