The police in Okpanam community near Asaba, Delta State,
yesterday killed three suspected armed robbers and arrested six during a gun
battle.
Reports said the armed robbery suspects were ambushed by the police in the area after a tip-off.
It was reliably gathered that the suspects were robbing some visitors to the community during the night, a situation whereby some of the youths had to turn informant to the police.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations officer in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu, said the suspects were arrested at the scene of their operation, adding that during their arrest, three of the suspects in a 10-man gang tried to escape and the police opened fire on them.
DSP Kalu disclosed that the police also arrested some hoodlums believed to be land speculators over a protracted land dispute in the community, adding that the suspects would be charged to court on completion of investigation.
